What is Air Force ROTC?

The Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps produces leaders for the United States Air Force, the United States Space Force and better citizens for America through a military educational program designed to give men and women the opportunity to become Air Force officers or Space Force officers while earning a college degree.

Freshmen and sophomore cadets take 2 semester credit hours of AFROTC courses in addition to their normal degree requirements. Junior and senior cadets take 3 hours. With rare exception, AFROTC credits can be used for general elective credit.

AFROTC is a tough and demanding program requiring full dedication. AFROTC Detachment 440, established in 1946, serves the University of Missouri, Central Methodist University, University of Central Missouri, Columbia College, Stephens College, Westminster College, and William Woods University. (See Affiliated Schools/Crosstowns for more information.)

After earning a degree and completing all required AFROTC courses, cadets are commissioned in the United States Air Force or the United States Space Force at the rank of Second Lieutenant. The standard active duty commitment is four years; however, officers who attend navigator training have a six-year commitment after training and pilots incur a ten-year commitment after training.
